This work is the result of a trip to Germany (undertaken in December 2000) and of personal research spanning more than two years, on the construction of memory and the mechanisms by which history is produced.
Through the narration of my family’s story, it delves into the memory of migration from Spain to Europe and reflects on the mechanisms of forgetting and remembering, reviving the idea of the construction of memory as a dialogue, and its formation based on personal experience as opposed to official history—which is restricted to the institutional sphere and structured around the aestheticisation and neutralisation of political subjects.
The inner memory also emphasises the importance of the body as a territory of memory and absence, and as a political agent: the Spanish state’s migration policy in the 1960s and 1970s is also a form of biopolitics and control over workers. The bodies of migrants are registered bodies, a flow of labour forced into displacement and remembered absentees who return years later.
This film essay explores the recovery of these bodies and their labour, and the forgetting of that absence, drawing on an experience—my own—marked by the need to remember and tell this story in order to vindicate other forms of narration, far removed from traditional hierarchies.
