‘The Rules of the Game’ is a conversation-performance, recorded in a single take, between the writer and activist Brigitte Vasallo and the artist, filmmaker and researcher María Ruido, on institutional violence and class performativity.
This work was commissioned by Es Baluard (Museu d’art contemporani de Palma) and led to a solo exhibition of the same title between March and August 2022.
‘The Rules of the Game’ reflects on the difficulties, conflicts and contradictions of class and gender that arise in the world of the arts and the cultural sphere, and on how we attempt to respond to them from a personal and intimate perspective.
This conversation is based on the idea that the performance of class—or social diglossia—does not merely consist of enjoying different economic and social conditions, but also involves adopting certain norms that curtail the possibility of internal movement. Your gestures and language must correspond to this new political performativity, which speaks to the place we are expected to occupy.
